How to set pin presses from top loads
Competition top loads stay useful when coaches write pin-press prescriptions from those targets—not when every specialty session ends with vague do some pins somehow notes.

Start from the current competition top or working load
A useful pin-press rule starts after the competition top or working load is already written. Read those loads for which heavy press pattern they cover and where clients struggle off pins, then decide which pin-height load and pin-contact note should follow. This is a reading method for building the pin press clients open—not software evaluation of board-press tools that mainly write board-thickness contact notes, shortened-partial tools that mainly write lockout-range depth notes, ROM tools that mainly log depth without a pin-height load, pause-rep tools that mainly write mid-rep holds, or progressive-overload tools that mainly chart planned-vs-performed load.
Keep the pin-height load explicit
If the only plan after a top set is somehow grind some pins, insert the pin-height load, the pin-contact note, which competition top load they sit beside, and what clients do when the bar leaves the pins so productive specialty sessions do not turn into unstructured pin guesses. Prefer readable pin-press rules over vague pin notes. Ignore the urge to rewrite accessories and session order when only the pin press needs an update.
Write the pin press on the program before the next session
Even clean pin-press rules fail if clients still open bare competition top loads with no pin-height prescription. Put the pin-height load and pin-contact note beside the competition top load on the assigned program, and note which top load drove the prescription so next review can judge whether the pin press still fits.
