Set a weekly hard-set budget

Use training days, recovery, priority focus, accessory appetite, and session length to cap demanding work so the week stays finishable and progressive.

Weekly hard-set budget26 sets~7 hard sets/day · Squat + bench focus
Split18 main / 8 accessoryBalanced 26-hard-set week with room for priority lifts and limited support work

Main-lift caps

  • Aim for about 5 main-lift hard sets per training day.
  • Assign about 10 hard sets to squat-pattern work across the week.
  • Assign about 8 hard sets to bench/press-pattern work.
  • Keep deadlift/hinge work mostly supportive unless a hinge day is already scheduled.

Accessory guidance

  • Keep accessories near 2 hard sets per day when the week is on-budget.
  • Keep accessories near 8 hard sets total across the week.
  • Prefer 1-2 high-value support movements over a long accessory circuit.
  • Warm-ups and technique drills do not need to count against this hard-set budget.

What to cut first

  • Cut low-skill isolation and duplicate pattern accessories before touching priority exposures.
  • If time is short, keep the top hard sets and leave the bottom of the session optional.
  • On higher-frequency weeks, spread hard sets so no single day becomes a junk-volume dump.

Coaching rules

  • Count only demanding working sets as hard sets; warm-ups stay outside the budget.
  • Protect priority-lift hard sets before protecting accessories.
  • If adherence slips, lower next week's hard-set budget instead of adding makeup volume.
  • Log planned versus completed hard sets so the budget can improve from real data.

Why this matters

Strength coach weekly hard-set budget planner

weekly programs stack too many hard sets and clients miss the work that mattered most. This tool should help coaches make a clearer decision before they turn the draft into client programming.

Inputs this tool uses:

  • Training days available
  • Recovery status
  • Priority lift focus
  • Accessory volume bias
  • Session length

Expected output: A weekly hard-set budget with main-lift caps, accessory guidance, and what to cut first.

You can use this page without the widget: write down those inputs, then treat the result as A weekly hard-set budget with main-lift caps, accessory guidance, and what to cut first.. The calculator above is optional.
